Best Foods: What's Worth Buying
The three checkpoints · value vs. power · Halloween perks · when top-tier food is a trap
Power vs. Value: Two Different Questions
"Best food" has two answers in this game, and confusing them wastes more cash than any other mistake. By power, it's the Phantom Lobster — $1.8Dd, Cosmic tier 16, the top of the 38-food ladder, opening the rarest animal pools in the game. By value, the best food is the cheapest one that opens your current farming zone's full roster — which for almost every player is one of three checkpoints on the way up, not the ceiling itself. Throwing premium food into shallow water is the food system's most expensive trap: pools don't spawn where your throw doesn't land.
The Three Checkpoints
Cheese
$1MRare · Tier 3The first checkpoint. Your first seven-figure purchase, and the moment the pen economy visibly shifts: Rare-tier pools upgrade your Savanna-through-Ocean rosters enough that slot income self-funds the next steps. If your progression feels stalled in the mid-starter zones, this is usually the missing purchase — not more training.
Golden Apple
$120QaSecret · Tier 9The mid-game gate. At $120Qa it's a serious investment, and it's the tier where Mythical Paradise's headline animals (Phoenix $380Qi/s, Dragon $270Qi/s) enter your realistic spawn pool. The rule around it: don't buy Golden Apple until your Throw Power reaches Mythical Paradise's back third — that's when the premium converts directly into S-adjacent income.
Ghost Chowder
$18UDCosmic · Tier 16The Cosmic entry point. $18UD opens the ghost pools — Phantom Harbor's S-tier roster (Ghost Pirate $256Dc/s, Lich, Banshee and the rest) becomes farmable. This is the food that funds the new-map campaign; most players' first decillion-scale income arrives the week they buy it.
Phantom Lobster
$1.8DdCosmic · Tier 16The power ceiling. $1.8Dd, and paired with Nuclear Wasteland-grade Throw Power it completes your access to every pool in the game. Worth it exactly once: when depth is no longer your constraint and you're optimizing the hunt for the Waste Harvester itself. Until then, it's a trophy, not a tool.
The Jump-Tier Rule (And Its One Exception)
The core buying discipline: hold cash until you can afford a full rarity-tier jump, then buy immediately. Single-step purchases inside a tier feel like progress but mostly burn the budget that pen slots and training need. The exception is tier-edge friction — if your current food can't reliably pull the animals your depth already reaches, one step up inside the tier is the cheap fix. A quick self-test: if your pen's income per second covers the next food's price in under a minute of AFK, buy it now; if it takes half an hour, you're shopping too far up the ladder.
Halloween Foods: Buy At Your Tier's Pace
The October 25 update added five foods — Candy Corn ($750No), Hot Cider ($8.5Dc), Golden Pumpkin ($75Dc) at Eternal tier 15, and Ghost Chowder ($18UD), Calamari Rings ($200UD) at Cosmic tier 16. Community testing reports Golden Pumpkin as the best pairing for Harvest Fields hunts, and a single tracker credits Uranium Cake with boosted Waste Harvester odds — both flagged as unconfirmed until more sources agree. Availability-wise, the developer deleted the Halloween event's official end date, and the items were still in shop stock as of November 8; there's no confirmed removal date, so buy when your tier matches, not out of deadline panic. If a future update rotates them out, this page and the update log will say so.
